Two people arrested in prison drone drug smuggling attempt in Michigan City

Prison Drone Smugglers Busted Yet Again

Daron V. Mitchell, 28, of Hobart, and Juwan Mitchell, 27, of Chicago, are facing multiple charges after allegedly attempting to smuggle drugs and contraband into the state prison in Michigan City using a drone.

Around 2 a.m. on May 14, 2025, prison staff observed drone activity over the facility. Responding officers tracked two individuals fleeing from a nearby wooded area. Both were apprehended after a short foot chase.

A backpack allegedly discarded during the incident was recovered and found to contain:

    • 183 sublingual film packages of Buprenorphine/Naloxone (8mg/2mg)

    • 18 sublingual film packages of Buprenorphine/Naloxone (12mg/3mg)

    • 225.2 grams of marijuana

    • A black Nutel Robotics drone remote

    • Two orange drone batteries

    • Drone equipment and a black power cord

    • A blue Motorola G Play cell phone

    • A word find book with several pages containing an unknown substance

    • A clear plastic bag with cigarettes and cigars

    • Krazy Super Glue gel

    • A blue lighter

    • A yellow Razor vape

    • Several empty black plastic bags

Both Daron and Juwan Mitchell have been charged with:

    • Attempted Dealing in a Schedule III Controlled Substance (Level 5 Felony)

    • Attempted Trafficking with an Inmate (Level 5 Felony)

    • Attempted Dealing in Marijuana (Level 6 Felony)

    • Resisting Law Enforcement (Class A Misdemeanor)

    • Possession of Marijuana (Class B Misdemeanor)

Both men were transported to the LaPorte County Jail. The case remains under investigation.
